The Zimbabwen government is investing $600 Million in Matabeleland Zambezi Water Project to solve for good the recent water crisis faced by the country due to drought. The Matabeleland Zambezi Water Project (MZWP) embodies a massive water project in Zimbabwe's arid Matabeleland North province which aims to alleviate the persistent water scarcity that plague Zimbabwe's second largest city, Bulawayo, by providing water from the glorious Zambezi river to the city. The mega infrastructure investment project is being implemented in three phases, with the Gwayi-Shangani Dam as first phase, Gwayi-Shangani Dam to Bulawayo Pipeline as second phase and a final Gwayi-Shangani Dam to Zambezi River Pipeline as the third Phase.

The Gwayi-Shangani dam, whose construction has been outsourced to China International Water and Electric Corporation (CWE), an affiliate of China Three Gorges Corporation, after winning the construction bidding, will be completed in the first phase. CWE is building a 70-meter-high, 305-meter-wide roller-compacted concrete (RCC) gravity dam. The infrastructure will hold 634 million cubic metres of water and will be situated 6 km downstream of the confluence of the Gwayi and Shangani Rivers (tributaries of the Zambezi River).
