‘The Girl I Left Behind Me’ is a British Patriotic song dating back to at least the 18th century, if not the 16th. It remarks of the life of a soldier longing to return to his girl, asking God to help him return from war safely to his home. It was mostly played when soldiers left for wars or to the colonies of Britain. The song was fairly popular, picking up different verses in each era it was sung in, as recent as in World War 1, with it being sung insulting the German Kaiser. It’s less popular now, but still a well known piece of music.
