Solo Balapan Station was built by the private railway company Nederlandsch Indische Spoorweg Maatschappij (NISM) along with the construction of the 74 km Kedungjati-Solo railway line with a line width of 1,435 mm. Thursday, February 10, 1870 Solo Balapan Station was inaugurated. Initially, this station was named Solo Station. The use of the name Solo Balapan is suspected because not far from the station location there is a race terrein (horse race) for racing.

The inauguration of the Solo Balapan Station also opened the Semarang - Solo connection with the train line. It was recorded that in 1872, NISM operated two train trips from Solo-Semarang and vice versa. The existence of the train facilitates the transportation of sugar, tobacco, and coffee from the hinterland to the port in Semarang. Along with the increasing transportation activity at Solo Balapan Station, the need for station building space also increased, so that in 1926 the station was renovated.

The renovation was designed by Ir. Thomas Karsten by modernizing the station and adapting the styles that are currently popular in Europe with local architectural styles. During his visit to Solo Balapan Station in 1928, the Governor General of the Dutch East Indies de Graeff stated that Solo Balapan Station was the most strategic station in Solo. Solo Balapan Station has been designated as a cultural heritage building based on the Decree of the Mayor of Surakarta Number 646/1-R/1/2013 in 2013 and is registered with the National Registration of Cultural Conservation with the number RNCB.201660908.02.001258.
