WEST PALM BEACH — Palm Beach Gardens defeated Palm Beach Lakes on Friday night by a 35-14 margin, blowing the contest open with a runaway second-half effort.

Though the Rams (0-6) started off on the front foot, jumping to a quick 2-0 lead on an opening-kickoff safety, starting quarterback Derrick Flanders suffered a significant hip injury in the first quarter.

Junior signal-caller Joel Sacerio finished the Rams’ touchdown drive, but from there, nearly every big play belonged to the Gators (4-2).

Here are some takeaways from Garden’s win in Friday night’s rivalry contest.

Vincent Dubose continues to lead Gators defense
Gardens’ defensive effort had several big-time performances, including the return of senior Brandon Powell, who came back from a knee injury.

But as per usual, Vincent Dubose was also a walking highlight reel.

Gators fans have seen him at linebacker, safety, and even running back, but now the all-around star athlete has also returned to his roots at defensive end.

Gardens wants to unleash the senior playmaker in every way possible, and that includes allowing him full access to the opposite backfield off the end.

“I can’t really speak more highly [of him],” Palm Beach Gardens head coach Tyrone Higgins said. “The kid is pretty much unblockable, and a lot of people don’t know that that’s actually his original position.”

Gardens’ coach went on to say he believes the senior can genuinely benefit college programs with the way he’s playing right now.

“I pray someone comes in and picks him up because he’s a freakin’ player,” Higgins said.

Brand Campbell continues to draw praise
It took some time, but just as he always seems to do, Gators quarterback Brand Campbell settled into Friday night's game.

And when the junior quarterback finds his rhythm, the magic starts to happen on Gardens’ offense.

“Just since the spring, we always knew he had certain attributes,” Higgins said. “Some of them were tangible. Some of them weren’t so tangible. So we’re just trying to make sure he’s playing at a top level.”

Those intangibles often come in the clutch, during which moments Higgins III said the team looks to follow him as one of the team’s prominent leaders.

As far as the tangibles go, accuracy has never been a problem for Campbell, who also plays varsity baseball for the Gators.

“A lot of people don’t know how freakin’ precise his arm is,” Higgins said. “His arm is laser-precision. It’s on the money pretty much every single time.”

The Gardens coach says Campbell can hit a receiver on either shoulder at will, which is a big benefit to an offense that runs a lot of run-pass option plays.

Ultimately, it’s during the biggest moments that Campbell seems to shine brightest.

“The stage is kind of where he lives,” Higgins summarized. “He’s not afraid of the lights, as you can see. He wants the ball when the game is on the line.”
