Based remotely on a chanson for 7 voices by a Franco-Flemish composer Jean de Castro some decades earlier, this reduction by Gabriel Bataille for lute and 2 voices is a dialogue between two shepherds: one male, one female. In the dialogue, there is a playful flirtation between two pastoral characters in a manner similar to the duets from the Italian operas of Monteverdi and Rossi.

He: Je t'ayme dieu sçait combien (God knows how much I love you)
She: Comme quoy? (Like what?)
He: Comme toy, ma rebelle Patourelle (Like you, my rebel Shepherdess)
She: Comme toy, ma rebelle Patourelle (Like you, my rebel Shepherdess?)
En rien ne m'a contenté (Nothing satisfied me)
Ce propos trop affecte Patoureau (this remark affected me much, Shepherd)

A cent et cent mille ennuis (by a hundred and hundred thousand troubles)
Dont aymer je ne la puis (I cannot love her)
N'estant plus qu'un corps sans ame (being no more than a soulless body)
Pour trop cherir une dame (to cherish my lady too much)
She: Comme quoy?
He: Comme toy, ma rebelle Patourelle
She: Comme toy, ma rebelle Patourelle.
Laisse la ce comme toy (Leave it this "like you")
Dis, je t'ayme comme moy (tell me, I love you as I do me)
He: Je ne m'ayme pas moy mesme (I do not love myself)
She: Dis moy donques si tu m'aymes? (Tell me therefore if you love me)
