Based remotely on a chanson for 7 voices by a Franco-Flemish composer Jean de Castro some decades earlier, this reduction by Gabriel Bataille for lute and 2 voices is a dialogue between two shepherds: one male, one female. In the dialogue, there is a playful flirtation between two pastoral characters in a manner similar to the duets from the Italian operas of Monteverdi and Rossi.

She: Patoureau, m'ayme tu bien? (Shepherd, do you love me?)
He: Je t'ayme dieu sçait combien (God knows how much I love you)
She: Comme quoy? (Like what?)
He: Comme toy, ma rebelle Patourelle (Like you, my rebel Shepherdess)
She: Comme toy, ma rebelle Patourelle (Like you, my rebel Shepherdess?)
En rien ne m'a contenté (Nothing satisfied me)
Ce propos trop affecte Patoureau (this remark affected me much, Shepherd)
sans moquerie (without mockery)
M'ayme tu dis je te prie? (You say love me, I beg you)
Comme quoy? (Like what?)
He: Comme toy, ma rebelle Patourelle (Like you, my rebel Shepherdess)
She: Comme toy, ma rebelle Patourelle (Like you, my rebel Shepherdess?)
Tu m'eusse respondu mieux (You could have answered me better)
Je t'ayme comme mes yeux (I love you like my eyes)
He: Trop de hayne je leur porte (My much hate I have for them)
Car ils ont ouvert la porte (because they open the way)
Aux peines que j'ay reçeu (to the pain I received)
Des lors que je t'aperçeu (As soon as I saw you)
Quand ma liberte fut prise (When my freedom was taken)
De ton oeil qui me maitrisse (by you eye which controls me)
She: Comme quoy? (Like what?)
He: Comme toy, ma rebelle Patourelle (Like you, my rebel Shepherdess)
She: Comme toy ma rebelle Patourelle (Like you, my rebel Shpherdess)
Patoureau parle autrement (Shepherd say something else)
Et me dis tout rondement (and tell me roundly)
M'ayme tu comme ta vie? (You love me like your life)
He: Non, car elle est asservie (No, because my life is enslaved)
A cent et cent mille ennuis (by a hundred and hundred thousand troubles)
Dont aymer je ne la puis (I cannot love her)
N'estant plus qu'un corps sans ame (being no more than a soulless body)
Pour trop cherir une dame (to cherish my lady too much)
She: Comme quoy?
He: Comme toy, ma rebelle Patourelle
She: Comme toy, ma rebelle Patourelle.
Laisse la ce comme toy (Leave it this "like you")
Dis, je t'ayme comme moy (tell me, I love you as I do me)
He: Je ne m'ayme pas moy mesme (I do not love myself)
She: Dis moy donques si tu m'aymes? (Tell me therefore if you love me)
Comme quoy? (Like what?)
He: Comme toy, ma rebelle Patourelle
She: Comme toy me rebelle Patourelle.
