(7 Feb 2019) President Donald Trump on Thursday signed the Women's Global Development and Prosperity Intitiave, which the White House is calling the "first-ever whole of government approach" focused on advancing female participation in the global economy.
The initiative, spear-headed by the president's daughter and senior adviser Ivanka Trump, will look to improve womens' access to quality education and skills training, support female entrepreneurship and reduce barriers to womens' participation in the global workforce.
Trump said the goal is to reach 50 million women in the developing world through the program by 2025.
Following the signing, the president was asked whether a bipartisan compromise was in the works over border security to avert a second government shutdown on Feb. 15.
Trump sounded a more positive tone than he has in the past, but still took a wait and see approach.
"I certainly hear that they are working on something and both sides are moving along," Trump said. "We'll see what happens. We need border security. We have to have it, it's not an option. Let's see what happens."
Trump had previously said he doesn't expect the talks to produce much, and he's threatened to declare a national emergency to bypass Congress and build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border.
The president was also asked about acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker saying he will not appear before Congress unless a House committee drops its threat of a subpoena for his testimony.
Trump said Whitaker is "an outstanding person," adding that "if he did testify, he'd do very well."
Democrats say they want to talk to Whitaker because he is a close ally of Trump who has criticized special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation, which he oversees.
