MG 4 2025 New vs Old Launch Date UK Australia Price Range Interior Problems Issues XPOWER MG 4 Review

There are 3 main improvements, that MG has done in the upcoming MG4, over the current model. First, is the size. It is slightly bigger, than the current MG 4, and perceptibly more premium as well. Expect the boot space to go up to four-fifty to five hundred liters as well.

MG has achieved a weight reduction of around 150 kilos, in spite of the larger dimensions. Power has dropped by around 7 h-p, but the power to weight ratio has improved, so expect a slight improvement in performance.

MG will most probably rationalize the battery sizes to two options down from the existing three. Thanks to lower weight and aerodynamic improvements the range is also bound to increase. Plus, the rear will get fresh new styling, reminiscent of the cyberster coupe.

Last but not the least, the charging is also expected to improve to at least 150 kilowatt, if not 175, like the Geely EX5. Rest of the details are scarce at the moment, but we will update you as soon as further details emerge. For now, lets take a look at how it compares to it's archrival, the BYD Dolphin.

The biggest problem with the Dolphin is the poverty spec of it's base model. It has just ninety four horsepower and takes a yawn-inducing, 12.3 second to reach a hundred k-p-h.

Avoid it at all costs. On the other hand, the base MG has a respectable, 168 horsepower, capable of scaling the ton in 7.7 second. In the UK, the MG is significantly cheaper than the Dolphin, giving it even more of an edge over the BYD.

X-power fans must be wondering, why there's no mention of that little monster anywhere on screen. It is simply because there's no comparable model within the Dolphin range.

But for those dreaming of out-dragging a Porsche nine-eleven, or need the added grip, of an all wheel drive on icy roads, you can have it, with a slight stretch of your budget!

One takeaway for all the fellow enthusiasts here, used X-powers are already selling for less than 50 thousand dollars in Australia and 20,000 pounds in the UK. One more important advantage, that the MG holds over the Dolphin, is it's fast charging ability.

Except for the base variant, all other models of the MG charge at an impressive 140-plus kilowatts. That is 10 kilometres per minute and almost twice as fast as the Dolphin. Now, there are 2 antidotes to the MG4 in the market. First is the BYD Sea-lion 6 or Seal U, plug-in hybrid.

It has enough EV range for 90 percent of your driving needs, along with a petrol engine, to take care of the remaining 10 percent, in a two minute tank-full. Given the inadequate charging station scenario of today, buying a plug-in hybrid, is clearly a better choice, for the next five years.

If cars and infrastructure, both gets to at least 250 kilowatt of capability, only then it makes sense to switch to pure eevees. No point being a stickler, for doing the last 10 percent miles, on pure-EV, before that happens.

New MG4 XPower: A £35k supercar SLAYER!
This might just be the best value performance car in the world - meet the all-new MG4 XPower!

Now was know what you’re thinking - how can an MG4 be a performance car?! But trust us, this is no normal MG.

You see, whereas the normal MG 4 is equipped with a single electric motor that can deliver 203hp, the XPower comes with dual motors and the ability to produce 435hp and 600Nm of torque! That’s enough to propel it to 60mph in just 3.8 seconds!

But here’s the thing, you get all that power for only £36,5000! That means you get more power than an RS3 for half the price!

But how different is the MG4 XPower from the normal MG4? Well, it’s pretty much identical. There’s a bit of additional bodywork on the outside, and on the inside, you get some Alcantara trim on the seats and some red stitching, but otherwise, it’s pretty much the same car!

The question is, can an all-electric crossover SUV really match up to the brute force and fun of the lesser-powered RS3 and AMG A45 S? You’ll need to stick with Mat and see for yourself!

MG4 2025 review: Essence 77kWh long-term test | Is this the best-value long-range electric car?
The 2025 MG4 has well and truly made its presence felt since its arrival in 2022, with the small hatchback having helped to initiate a price war among entry-level fully electric cars from China, including the BYD Dolphin and GWM Ora. But the truth is the MG models caters to a lot of wants and needs with its variant line-up, covering the budget-conscious all the way up to the high-performance enthusiasts.

In between, though, is the Essence 77kWh, which offers the longest driving range of any MG4, at a WLTP-rated 530km. Better yet, it's priced at $52,990 drive-away, which arguably makes it the best-value EV currently on sale in Australia.
