Mannar, also known as Maṉṉār in Tamil and මන්නාරම in Sinhala, stands as the principal hub of Mannar District in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka, overseen by an Urban Council. Situated on Mannar Island with a picturesque view of the Gulf of Mannar, this town boasts the iconic Ketheeswaram temple. The term "Mannar" in Tamil signifies the elevated sandy terrain, reflecting the geological origin of Mannar Island formed by sand accumulation.

Historically, Mannar gained prominence as a pearl fishing center, dating back to the 2nd-century CE as mentioned in the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea. The town is renowned for its baobab trees and houses a fort constructed by the Portuguese in 1560, later captured and reconstructed by the Dutch in 1658. While the fort's ramparts and bastions remain intact, the interior has seen substantial destruction.
