Описание к видео Push for board reform amid surge in Metro property appraisal appeals

here is growing demand for changes to the Metro Board of Equalization, as the Property Assessor said there is an unprecedented number of appeals of property appraisals.

This comes as people have had issues with their property valuations, which they said have contributed to a higher property tax.

The board is appointed by the mayor and confirmed by the Metro Council.

The mayor's office told FOX 17 News they are in the process of appointing alternative board members to hear property owners' appeals faster.

Metro councilmember Jacob Kupin had a few ideas to help, as appeals are booked out months ahead.

Across Nashville, property owners are battling their valuations.

The Property Assessor's office said to date, 15,278 appeal hearings have been heard or scheduled.

There have been 649 new appeals since last Thursday, when the number was 14,629.

The unprecedented number of appeals is leading to long wait times.

Property owner Jason Mitchell told FOX 17 news it took him 9 months to get through the formal appeal process.

The formal appeal is what happens after an informal review is denied.

"How frustrating has this process been for you?" I asked Mitchell.

"Extremely," he replied. "All it does is delay and delay and delay.''

Councilmember Kupin is trying to help people like Mitchell.

"There are folks that are paying their taxes in February and not hearing their appeals till November," said Kupin.

Metro Board of Equalization is a volunteer group of five people to decide on the appeals.

Kupin has some solutions.

"The best thing we could do, if we're able to do it, is have multiple boards operating at the same time, because then we can move through that backlog,' said Kupin.
He said another issue is getting those volunteers to show up to all the meetings, despite them working hard.

"There are efforts underway just to make sure that the people who are the five main BOE members are able to be present and scheduled," said Kupin.

The mayor's spokesperson told me they appointed 5 alternatives to the board last year, but it's clearly not enough.

I reached out to the mayor's office to ask about qualifications to serve on the board and whether the mayor is considering Kupin's suggestion of having multiple boards.

The mayor's office said they look for people who have flexible schedules and an understanding of real estate values.

But whether the mayor is open to multiple boards remains unanswered.
