This New Year's Eve, law enforcement and security officials are taking extra measures to keep celebrations safe amid a heightened threat environment.

In New Orleans, the new year will be rung in with the solemn anniversary of a vehicle ramming attack on Bourbon Street that killed 14 people and authorities said was inspired by ISIS. Several hundred National Guard troops will assist local police at the request of Louisiana's governor. They will also stay to help with upcoming large events like the Sugar Bowl.

For the nation's largest celebration in New York City's Times Square, there will be a larger police presence than last year. New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said a new addition to this year's security operation are secondary screenings of attendees inside viewing "pens."
