The princely state of Jamnagar was ruled by the Jadeja dynasty, who considered themselves the descendants of Lord Krishna. Originally known as Nagna Bandar, the town was captured by Jam Rawalji in 1540 CE. Then known as Nawanagar, the Jadeja rulers fought many wars with the Mughals. The most famous ruler of Jamnagar was Ranjitsinghji, who succeeded to the throne in 1907. A fine test cricketer, he played for Sussex as well as England Cricket team. After his demise in 1933, the Ranji Trophy was begun in his honour. The last ruler of Jamnagar was Jam Saheb Digvijaysinghji, who started several industries such as the Ashoka Hotel in Delhi, Digjam suitings, Sir Digvijay Cement and Jam Air. Today, Jamnagar riyasat has been immortalise din history due to its connection with Cricket.
