What Does a Lactation Consultant Do?
Nobody knows what a lactation consultant does. And they're always like, what is she going to do? You know, and I put them at ease and we start to talk and I ask them questions about their own health history.
If I notice a tongue tie in baby or baby already with an open mouth posture, signifying not breathing through their nose, which we all know we're supposed to think, I'll say something like, do either of you snore? And then they start telling us about, telling me about all the history of their own health journeys or of their other children. Like, no, you know, I couldn't breast feed my son but now Oh, he's in high school and he's been through it all. He couldn't nurse. He had trouble with the bottle. He had trouble with solace. He's been in speech therapy all his life. Maybe he's got ADHD and nobody ever checked for a tongue tie. Somebody mentioned that he might have one. Could that be related? And yes, of course it's related, [00:01:00] right?
So, or I had a dad recently being treated by a functional medicine doctor for sleep apnea. And I was like, when I told them that their baby had a tongue tie, he was a little bit like, "I feel bad. Did I do this to my baby?" But the red lights went on for him or the green light saying, "Do you mean if we take care of him, we may prevent things in the future?" And it's nice to make those associations.
