Alice Chance's 'Heirloom' (2023), commissioned and performed by Rubiks Collective.

Over the course of this mother-daughter motet, we hear from fifteen women from five different families. First, we hear from the Zaro/Savage family. Originally from the Torres Strait (Mer Island) they are now based in Cairns. We hear from Leila Savage, joined by her daughter Kaylynn Zaro. Both are then joined by Kaylynn’s daughter Jennayah.

We hear the spoken voice of Blue-mountains based Felicity Wilcox, reflecting on a special gift her mother Christina gave her for Christmas. We hear Christina Wilcox sing. Felicity’s voice returns, followed by her daughter Tallis Gill. Kimberley Hodgson reflects on her mother’s migration to Australia from the Philippines. Her voice is followed by her mother, Delfina Hodgson. We then hear the voice of Kimberley’s niece and goddaughter, Avaria Rose Hodgson.

Paris-based Lucie Coquet speaks of her family’s traditions with song lines going back generations to their native Bretagne region in France. We hear the sung voices of her grandmother Anne-Yvette (Annette) Coquet, her aunt Emma Coquet, and Lucie again. Finally, we hear Zohreh Zahraee, who reflects on a period when she returned from France to Iran to help her mother during an operation.

Zohreh sings on behalf of her mother, who did not wish to sing for cultural reasons, but listened as her daughter sang. We then hear the voice of her other daughter, Zohreh’s younger sister Tahereh Duchêne. Finally, we hear the voice of Tahereh’s daughter Camille Duchêne. The voices come together in staggered polyphony, canon, and finally in homophonic unison.
