Описание к видео Marios Tokas meets Nese Yasin for the first time - 01- Camden Cypriot Festival 1991

Marios Tokas explains in Greek how he had just met Nese Yasin for the first time, after he had already set her poem "My Country has been Divided in Two, which of the two parts should I love" ( "Η δική μου η πατρίδα" "Yurdunu Sevmeliymis Insan" ) to music. This song had already become well known all over Cyprus, and Greece at that time, but this was the first meeting of the composer with the poet. Part of a two week festival of Cypriot Arts during the Camden Cypriot Festival 1991.

(Translation below from the spoken Greek, of the comments by Marios Tokas)

Please allow me to tell you a short story, which I believe has great significance. Some ten years ago, around 1980, while I was a student in Athens, while looking through a newspaper, I read a poem (in Greek Translated by Eleni Peonidou) written by a certain Turkish Cypriot lady. Reading that poem was a very profound moment in my life. As soon as I read the poem, I placed it in front of me on the piano, and I wrote the music for it .... I don't know whether you will think this strange .... within three or four minutes.

Ten or eleven years have passed since then ... that song has never been released on record, yet despite this, people in Greece know it, everyone in Cyprus knows it, and a few hours ago I met for the first time, the person who wrote those words....

We have in our midst tonight, my friends .... Nese Yasin.

(Audience applaud as Nese Yasin joins Marios Tokas on Stage)

(The next clip in this sequence provides a unique rendition of the poem, performed in the Turkish language by Nese Yasin, accompanied on the piano by Marios Tokas).
