Coming into this round, Carmichael had won his first race of the 2002 season at Phoenix (the previous round), while McGrath finished a dismal 6th place (which was his best finish of the '02 season until Atlanta). Now, the Supercross world got to see a battle between the 2 rivals after Carmichael stole McGrath's thunder the previous season in 2001.
