After a four-month absence, Ukraine's propeller-driven drone-busting plane, World War I style, may be back in action over Odessa, writes Forbes military columnist David Axe.
A piston-engine Yak-52 trainer jet, a Soviet relic from the 1970s, has reportedly returned to the skies over the Black Sea port city to hunt down Russian reconnaissance drones.
"The pilot in the front seat and, presumably, a shotgun-wielding shooter in the back seat - used 1,000 liters of fuel and were forced to land for more fuel in the middle of the battle," a Ukrainian sailor in Odessa told "Kale."
During its five hours of maneuvering, the Yak-52 reportedly shot down at least one Orlan drone. The aircraft, which costs no more than a few hundred dollars per hour of flight, is said to be an effective way to shoot down drones that themselves cost around $100,000.
"There has been no official confirmation of the Yak-52's return to flight since the aircraft last appeared over Odessa in July. But then again, there has never been any official information about the Yak-52's daring patrols over the port city," the analyst writes.
He found it odd that the Yak-52 reportedly burned 1,000 liters of fuel during its supposed long-haul flight over Odessa on Tuesday. The largest version of the Yakovlev trainer has a maximum fuel capacity of 280 liters.
"If the Ukrainian pilots really burned through about three full tankers of fuel, returning to base at least twice to refuel, they must have been flying at full speed - climbing, diving and turning - to target the Orlans," Ax wrote.
In the three months since May, the piston-engine jet has shot down at least 10 Russian drones . Fans of the attack aircraft have posted videos and photos of the Yak-52 in action and on the ground. The growing number of kill marks on the old trainer attested to its effectiveness as a drone hunter.
Before the Yak-52 became world famous this summer, Russian forces apparently attempted to destroy the aircraft by firing missiles at what may have been its home airfield back in July. The subsequent disappearance of the Yak-52 from social media seemed to imply that the aircraft had been badly damaged and was undergoing repairs in the fall.
