Industrial3D had the privilege of building a series of engineering, oil and gas exploration, and explainer animations for Petrosains Museum. This oil and gas exploration animation explains the coring process for oil and gas exploration.

In oil and gas drilling, steel casing is used to prevent rock formations from collapsing or caving in. The process of casing begins with a conductor pipe, before the drilling rig even goes up. The conductor pipe prevents drilling mud from eroding the soft upper layer rock formations. A derrick is then set up and a larger drill bit drills through the conductor pipe. Drilling always begins with a larger drill bit and progresses to smaller bits. At around 60m to 1,200m deep, the bit is pulled out. A string of pipes is lowered into the hole. It keeps softer surface formations from caving in. Mud is then pumped into the surface cashing, followed by a bottom rubber plug. Cement is then pumped into the surface casing, followed by a top rubber plug. This plug prevents the cement from flowing back into the hole. The cement hardens in the space between the casing and the rock formation. A smaller drill bit then drills through the plugs and into the formation. The bit is pulled out and an intermediate casing is lowered into the hole. Mud is then pumped again, followed by a bottom plug, cement and finally, the top plug. The intermediate casing prevents unstable rock formations from caving in. Yet a smaller bit drills through the plugs. When the bit reaches the reservoir, it is pulled out for the last time. The last string of casing to be installed is called production casing. This casing runs from the surface all the way through the oil and gas reservoir. Similarly, this production casing is cemented. It will then be perforated to gain access to the oil and gas in the reservoir.
