Why Non Functional Harmony Isn't A Thing (Sort Of)

How does non-functional harmony work? It's a great question, but not an easy one to answer. It's easy to think of non-functional harmony as a sort of monolith, where everything works basically the same way, but in reality it describes hundreds or possibly even thousands of techniques, models, and ideas about the nature of harmony. Still, though, there's a couple approaches that seem to keep popping up over and over again, so if you want to test the waters, they're a good place to start.
