On the night of 6 July 1988, the Piper Alpha oil and gas platform in the North Sea, approximately 190 km from Aberdeen, was devastated by a series of catastrophic explosions and fires. The disaster unfolded rapidly after a gas condensate leak ignited, triggering multiple explosions that engulfed the entire platform. Within three hours, Piper Alpha was destroyed, resulting in the deaths of 167 people; only 61 survived, many suffering severe injuries and trauma.

The incident exposed critical failures in safety systems, emergency response, and platform design. The firewater deluge system was offline for maintenance, emergency communications failed, and evacuation procedures broke down amid the chaos. The scale of the tragedy led to a major overhaul of offshore safety regulations worldwide.
