While making preparations for the SUMUD Flotilla, which is scheduled to set sail for Gaza on 31 August, Brazilian activist and flotilla organiser Thiago Ávila told Middle East Eye:

“We are going there to open the way and to be in solidarity with the Palestinian people.”

Dozens of boats are expected to sail together in an attempt to break the blockade and deliver aid to Gaza.

The flotilla brings together organisers and participants from more than 40 countries, with the aim of breaking what they describe as Israel’s illegal siege and helping to open a humanitarian corridor.

It is set to be the largest maritime civilian mission since Israel’s siege of the Gaza Strip began in 2007.
