On May 12, 2025, Edan Alexander, a 21-year-old Israeli-American soldier from Tenafly, New Jersey, was released by Hamas after enduring 584 days in captivity. His release marks a significant development in the ongoing efforts to free hostages.

Alexander was serving in the IDF near the Gaza border when Hamas militants captured him during their coordinated assault on southern Israel. During his captivity, he reportedly suffered severe conditions, including torture, starvation, and prolonged confinement in a cage. His status as an active-duty soldier subjected him to harsher treatment compared to civilian hostages.

Hamas handed Alexander over to the Red Cross, which facilitated his transfer to Israeli authorities. Hamas portrayed the release as a “goodwill gesture” towards the United States, coinciding with diplomatic engagements involving U.S. President Donald Trump. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attributed the successful release to military pressure and diplomatic efforts.
