Since his self-titled debut album in 2011, Tulus has grown into a powerful household name among Indonesia’s finest singers. Beginning to grab his audience’s attention in 2011, Tulus have three accomplished albums under his belt with critical reception. With every album that he had delivered, Tulus has gained even more recognition with his works. Receiving numerous awards with his second album Gajah (2014) and his most recent work Monokrom (2017), Tulus is undeniably one of the most gifted musician Indonesia has ever seen.

Tulus is one of those musician we just wanted to cheer on and root for. Never for once has he ever made his listeners feel like he’s a copy of something or an imitation; in fact, he’s the complete opposite of all that. Living up to his chosen mononym, his music speaks from the heart; always evolving, but stayed true to his roots. If anything, words are his most powerful weapon, and his soothing voice compliments it. His capability to be able to make his repertoire relatable to his audiences is what makes him thrive in the sea of musicians trying to make their names in the industry.

His ventures in music have opened great avenues for the man himself. He sang Indonesia’s national anthem in the opening ceremony of Asian Games 2018 in acapella. Translated fans’ favorite “Sepatu” to Japanese as a way to expand his music to Japan. Collaborating with people from a different background artistically such as Davy Linggar, and Melati Suryodarmo, I’m guessing this man is far from finished.

But what makes me wants to celebrate him as a musician is how he's able to translate vulnerability into his music. A lot of artists aren’t comfortable exposing themselves to their fans as it can be rather tough. I guess his history of being a victim of bullying itself found its way to his music. People appreciate vulnerability, because everyone is vulnerable in their own way. I suppose that’s why Tulus is so successful in captivating his listeners; because he wears his heart on his sleeve and freed his skeletons from his closet, no facades necessary.
