A political battle could be brewing over housing along the Wasatch Front, where a legislative audit reported the area could effectively run out of building space in 20 years if cities don’t change their development plans.

However, some city mayors said they’re already doing what they can to increase housing, and they said the state is falling short in providing much-needed infrastructure.

The Legislative Auditor General’s Office looked at projected population growth along the Wasatch Front and combined that with current housing plans drawn up by cities like Bluffdale, Riverton and Herriman. Auditor General Kade Minchey said there simply won’t be enough room unless cities change their plans.

Plus, cities don’t have a lot of time to change their plans.
