What Documents To Bring To Tax Preparer and What To Expect When Filing Taxes

Описание к видео What Documents To Bring To Tax Preparer and What To Expect When Filing Taxes

Important documents to share with your tax professional:

-A valid form of ID, (Drivers license, Passport, State ID)

-Social Security Numbers for you, spouse and any dependents you plan to claim

-Documents showing wages or earned income (W2, 1099-NEC/MISC)

-Documents showing unearned income such as investments, interest or dividends (1099-B, 1099-DIV, 1099-INT)

-Documents showing pension payments or retirement distributions (W-4P, 1099-R)

-Documents showing college education costs and health insurance documents (1098-T, 1095-A)

-If you are divorced and want to file single, you need a valid divorce decree

Expect to receive W-2 and 1099 statements by January 31st, 2023. The employer or payer of these funds is required by the IRS to send these documents by this deadline. Keep in mind it is common practice for securities transactions on 1099-B statements to delay the release of this form. It can take until February sometimes to receive these documents.

Another important reminder is to update your employer and previous employers with your current address. A common thing we see throughout filing season is missing W-2 statements or 1099 forms because the client did not update their address with a previous employer. If your old employer doesn't know where to send the W-2, it is your responsibility to be proactive.

If you worked with a different tax professional in the past, you can request your old tax records and they are required to send them to you in a timely fashion. If you do not have your old tax records, it is possible to request them from the IRS electronically as well.

Setting an appointment with a tax professional such as a CPA, EA or Tax Attorney is gets more difficult as the tax filing deadline approaches. It is human nature to wait until the last minute to finish a task if there are no consequences.

However, when it comes to taxes, it is extremely important to be proactive and set your appointment as soon as possible. As a tax professional myself, the closer we are to the filing deadline, the busier we get.
