Black Star Canyon - Key Historical Moments

The story of Black Star Canyon begins in the 1800s. Mark Twain referred to this period as the Gilded Age. A time when rural America was transforming into an urban haven.

The Shoshone People called these beautiful streams home. And what do you do when someone tries to break into your home? You protect it. Unfortunately, in 1831 these natives fought hard and lost even harder against American trappers and settlers.

This was the first massacre that took place here. The breaking point - an alleged theft of a white man's horse. The punishment, death to all Shoshone people.

They didn’t stand a chance against the trappers. They surprised attacked The Shoshone People. Not a single American was harmed. Not a single Native survived.

Over 50 years later, in 1899 - a shootout took place at the Hidden Ranch - this time between two American families: The Hungerfords and the Greggs. The cause - a disagreement over the price of a horse. A dispute that ended in a deadly shootout.

James M. Gregg lost his life that year. After the heinous act, The Hungerfolds felt remorse and rode into town and turned themselves into the sheriff. If only justice was served. The Hungerfords case was thrown out of court after Henry Hungerford was found guilty, but before he was sentenced.

Today Black Star Canyon is famous for its eerily silent wind. I know, how can wind be silent? In this case, it isn’t. If you reach certain spots of the canyon you’ll hear the wind howl all around you as if warning you to leave.

In our case, the trail was long. It was hours before we saw another person. Part of this had to do with the fact we went the wrong way. Ah, yes. For those new to this trail be warned you must follow the river at all costs. All costs my friends. To leave the water is to risk your very own life.

We found ourselves deep in the woods - not lost, but not knowing where we were either. Eventually, we wised up and turned back.

The terrain, although moderate at times was unforgiving. We climbed rocky boulders, crossed fridged streams, and stared deep into the abyss of the canyon walls. I can still see the graffiti on the stones…”go back”...”666”...the words of mischievous kids or a warning from the other side?

Would we recommend this hike to others… sure. But there is a catch. If you come here, if you make your way past the electric fences, the abandoned shacks, down the rocks, if you come here...we ask you to remember what was here before. Remember Black Star Canyon isn’t like every other hike out there.

Black Star Canyon is haunted by its very own history.
