Bobo, a dock worker (Jean Gabin), wakes up in a run-down shanty on a San Pablo Bay barge after blacking out during an all-night drinking spree. He is reminded of their meeting the night before and his agreement to work for Takeo, the barge's owner and fisherman (played by Victor Sen Yung). Bobo plans to go and has no recollection of the meeting. Hearing that the cops are looking for the local bar-fly's killer as a police boat passes Pop Bobo cancels his intentions to attend because of Kelly (Arthur Aylesworth), who was strangled to death at some point during his drinking binge. Because of his history of drunken aggression, he fears that he may have murdered the man.

An American love drama with elements of a thriller, Moontide was released in 1942. After the original director, Fritz Lang, departed the film early in the shooting schedule, Archie Mayo took over as director, and Mark Hellinger served as producer. John O'Hara and Nunnally Johnson (uncredited) wrote the script, which was based on Willard Robertson's 1940 novel Moon Tide. Claude Rains, Thomas Mitchell, Ida Lupino, and French actor Jean Gabin are all in the movie.

Charles G. Clarke received a nomination for Best Cinematography at the Academy Awards for his black-and-white work. Even though the main actors gave captivating performances, the movie did not earn positive reviews when it was first released.
