The P.S. Canberra is a beloved and historic paddlesteamer operating out of Echuca, Victoria, offering a charming glimpse into the rich riverboat history of the Murray River.

Age and History:

Launched in 1913, the PS Canberra is over 110 years old, making her the oldest riverboat in the Murray River Paddlesteamer fleet. She was originally built in Goolwa, South Australia, and used as a single-deck fishing steamer. After being sold and used for excursions in Renmark, she underwent a significant restoration in 2002-2003, during which her diesel engine was replaced with a 1923 wood-fired Marshall and Sons steam engine, returning her to her authentic steam-powered glory. This was a remarkable feat, as no other known boat has ever been restored from diesel back to a steamer on the Murray.

Current Operations:

The P.S. Canberra is a popular tourist attraction in Echuca, offering daily one-hour sightseeing cruises on the Murray River. These cruises provide passengers with scenic views of the riverbanks, abundant wildlife, and the iconic Redgum trees. The vessel also hosts special lunch and dinner cruises, such as the "Wharf to Winery" and "Port to Plate" experiences, combining a delightful meal with a scenic river journey.

Onboard Experience:

Passengers can enjoy the views from wide viewing windows and both indoor and outdoor decks. The P.S. Canberra features a kiosk and a fully licensed bar. A highlight for younger passengers is the opportunity to steer the paddlesteamer, earning a free "skipper's certificate" (subject to conditions).
