Pentlandite is one cool, bronze, metallic rock waiting to be added to your collection at https://ColoRockCo.com/Shop/Pentlandite, and, as this specimen comes to us from the Sudbury Basin in Canada, this is a cool sample of Ruthenium - with a small concentration hidden behind the Nickel, Iron, Sulfur and Cobalt.

Pentlandite has a hardness of 3.5–4 and specific gravity of 4.6–5.0 and is typically non-magnetic, but it often also has a bit of Magnetite associated with it, as well as the obvious Pyrrhotite, which contains slightly more iron, so this specimen might be slightly magnetic. Pentlandite is found in abundance within ultramafic rocks, making it one of the most important sources of mined nickel.

Only 30 tons of Ruthenium are mined each year, mostly from the Ural mountains in Russia and Sudbury Basin in Canada and South Africa. Despite being the sixth most rare metal on earth, Ruthenium is the least expensive of the PGMs, yet, this is still an expensive rock! Most Ruthenium in Colorado seems to have come from a 11 separate meteorites.
