Scientists have been speaking out against cutbacks, muzzling, and at this point, scripting by the Harper Government. The Fifth Estate did a review of this today called "Silence of the Labs."

The first scientist interviewed in this video, seated, is James Turk. He is an executive director of the Canadian Association of University Teachers.

The second is Peter Phillips, a specialist in public policy and science at the University of Saskatchewan. He defends the government, arguing that it is not the role of scientists to speak to the public, just to politicians. In other words, he is suggesting that scientists should mind their place. Phillips further suggests that science should shift more towards commercial interests, which seems to be what is happening across the board.

If the government has nothing to hide, I fail to see why scientists should keep quiet. Their salaries and resources are not paid from the pockets of politicians, but by taxpayers. Scientists should not be treated as instruments to further a government's own interests. They are Canadian citizens performing important work for the Canadian people!

Does this sound like democratic thinking to you? What is our country turning into? I don't see "shades of grey," I see a clear shift towards big corporate interests, period.
