This episode we focus on a conversation with Allan Lim, a Khmer Australian who embarked on documenting thousands of Khmer temples in Southeast Asia. His project “Beyond Angkor” has been shaking up the historical sites and providing resources to people about the hidden and not-so-hidden Khmer temples and making headlines.

“The ancient Angkor civilization left behind a vast historical legacy and myriad art and architectural vestiges and artifacts across large swathes of Southeast Asia; not only Cambodia but throughout much of what is today Thailand, southern and central Laos as well as southern parts of Vietnam.
Beyond Angkor is a non-profit, independently run, online wiki database, created by a group of Angkorian temple enthusiasts as an ambitious, (some said crazy), attempt to record, describe, map and, where possible, photograph all relevant historical sites.

Our website, www.beyondangkor.org, was launched in the middle of 2021 - during the COVID-19 lockdowns - and over the past two years has grown substantially and today lists over 13,000 confirmed and tentative ancient Khmer sites.

In addition to historical details, contemporary descriptions, photo galleries and accurate GPS locations for each site, our unique interactive maps also display sites according to type, period, art styles and present-day condition. Map options then include, for instance, showing intact or ruined prasats (temples); or displaying locations of ancient bridges, reservoirs, arogyasalas (hospital chapels), or modern day depositories such as museums etcetera. Additionally, the site catalogues numerous, previously undocumented and as yet unconfirmed historical sites.

Our aim is also to encourage other temple enthusiasts out there to get involved; contribute information and photographs and help us to expand this community driven comprehensive database. So come join us as we explore ‘Beyond Angkor’.”
