We find a 1930's Utility Tunnel under the River Hull | Abandoned Engineering

This is Under The Surface. Harry and Andy will be visiting and documenting the Service and Utility Tunnels that are largely forgotten about. This episode was filmed underneath Kingston Upon Hull.

The tunnel was completed in 1931 and was to originally carry the power cables for the tram system that ran on the surface. Designed by T Thomas, a City Engineer, and built by Widnes Foundry. Other pipes and cables began to use the tunnel in the mid to late 1930's to protect them from the threat of War, which came in 1939. It is unclear if this was ever used as a air raid shelter, the lack of signage or makeshift additions makes it seem unlikely.

This tunnel is still in regular use by utility companies and is a important route for data and power that connects two sides of Hull via the diverted River Hull.

The tunnel now carries High Voltage, Fibre Optic data and Telephone Cables.
