He was born in Manhufe, Amarante. He studied in Paris. Was friends with Modigliani and was a neighbour of Picasso's. He participated wholeheartedly in the artistic revolution of the 20th century. He exhibited his work alongside some of the most-gifted vanguardist painters of Modernism, in places such as Paris, New York, London and Berlin. He was the very first Portuguese modernist.
