In this episode of Navigating Academia, Dr. Singh discusses how to get into a top PsyD doctoral program in clinical psychology.

A PsyD program is a doctorate in clinical psychology and it's a newer form of doctorate. Because of that, there are fewer programs that offer them and so it's a little bit of the Wild West out there still. It's less than 20 years ago that the first of these programs really emerged and so it's becoming much more mainstream now in 2019. It's still something, however, that relative to a Ph.D. in clinical psychology, it's not as well established.

PsyD vs Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology

Getting a PsyD is different than getting a Ph.D. because the Ph.D. usually has what we refer to as a scientist-practitioner model. That means that you're not only going to get training as a clinician but also in being a researcher. Not only are you going to read research and know how to apply it in clinical practice, but you're also actually going to be deeply involved in conducting research, submitting peer-reviewed journals presenting your findings on conference panels, and so forth.

ABOUT DR. SINGH

Jay Phoenix Singh, Ph.D., Ph.D. is a Fulbright Scholar, faculty at both UPenn as well as Cambridge, and the internationally award-winning Founder of the Global Institute of Forensic Research (successful 2017 exit as CEO).

Author of over 75 peer-reviewed articles and books, he completed his graduate doctoral studies in psychiatry at the University of Oxford and clinical psychology at Universitat Konstanz. He was named the youngest tenured Full Professor in Norway in 2014 and, since this time, has become the only psychology professor to have lectured for all eight Ivy League universities (Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Cornell, Brown, Dartmouth, UPenn) as well as both Oxford and Cambridge.
