As the number of confirmed coronavirus cases continues to climb in the U.S. one of the nation's largest retailers will start requiring all customers and employees to wear facial masks inside all American stores starting July 20.
Walmart and Sam's Club made the announcement Wednesday, July 15, and are joining the nationwide mask mandate bandwagon with other large chains like Best Buy and Starbucks.
The National Retail Federation is pushing more companies to join the effort, citing that stores are on the front lines of the public health crisis.
Hannah Walmsley, of Arlington Virginia, is immunocompromised and was actually diagnosed with COVID-19 back in June.
"I was an in-patient at a hospital actually for two weeks and I was on a floor with COVID patients," Walmsley said. "It's a nightmare. It's not something you want to be involved in or go through."
Walmsley went shopping at a Walmart in Burke, Virginia and noticed new signs and a security guard at the main entrance double-checking that everyone who entered had a mask on.
"I felt a lot more comfortable actually walking into the Walmart knowing that it was something that is enforced," Walmsley said."If it's going to help keep people healthy and save lives. I like that it doesn't really make it optional and if you don't like it than you don't have to come, or you can't come. And I think I like that they're holding us to that standard."
For Fairfax County resident Max Oehrlein, he thinks the timing is right as more states across the country are facing huge surges in confirmed coronavirus cases.
"Some stores some places are probably really nervous to do that and I think it's kind of the right thing to do at this point," Oehrlein said. "I think it sets a really good example and I think, I don't know, maybe people will follow on and actually get with it. I hope it makes more people wear masks."
When asked why they choose to wear masks in public, both Oehrlein and Walmsley agree that it's a minor inconvenience to help keep themselves and the rest of the community safe.
For most people, the new coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death.
