Sold to a Sicilian sulfur mine at the age of five, Enzo Favara has spent his young life as a carusu, laboring underground in danger and darkness. After twelve long years, he has almost saved enough money to pay off his father's debts and leave as a free man.

Recent tremors from the nearby volcano have the miners worried, but all Enzo and his friend Gaetano can think about is their future away from the mine. Their dreams are shattered, however, when Damiano Bastoni, a cruel overseer known as "Il Merlo," sends them down a deserted shaft to find a missing miner.

As they search the deepest pit, an earthquake strikes. Enzo and Gaetano run for their lives as deadly gas floods the tunnels and a cave-in begins.

Nearing safety, Gaetano-and the money-are lost under tons of rock. Enzo staggers to the surface and, blinded by grief, confronts II Merlo. After a heated exchange, the pair draw their knives and attack each other.

Enzo is bested by his experienced opponent and narrowly survives. He flees the mine,

by II Merlo and his men.
