In US news and current events today, Alyssa Carson is training to become the first person on Mars. Carson is a 19-year-old from Louisiana. She attended her first space camp when she was 7 and has since attended space camp 19 times.

Carson says her dream of becoming an astronaut was influenced by pop culture such as the ‘Mission to Mars’ episode of the cartoon ‘The Backyardigans.’

Carson is an ambassador for She Can STEM, an initiative empowering girls to pursue STEM careers. Less than 30% of the world’s researchers are women, and studies show women in STEM are paid, published, and promoted less than men. While she studies astro-biology at Florida Tech, Carson says the gender gap is remains relevant.

NASA has recently made history forletting women thrive in space. In October 2019, NASA’s 221st spacewalk was conducted by an all-women team for the first time ever. NASA has set a goal to send the first humans to Mars by 2030, a mission Carson is determined to be on. She’s set to graduate from college in 2023. She is training for her
possible trip to Mars with Project PoSSUM,

The private science org studies the upper-atmosphere and its role in the climate crisis. Carson hopes her involvement in STEM projects & research, and advocacy with She Can STEM helps girls realize that no dream is out of reach.
