Different questions related to baldness, hair grafts, hair loss, hair transplant procedures and medical treatments for hair loss are being raised by patients now and then, including the followers of Dr John Watts, who keep flooding his series of hugely popular educational videos on his popular YouTube channel with queries related to different hair issues.
In this video session, Hyderabad's noted dermatologist & trichologist and one of the Best Hair Transplant Surgeons in Hyderabad, Dr John Watts answers a specific query on the best time to use derma roller therapy after undergoing a hair transplant procedure.
Can a hair transplant patient immediately use a derma-roller after a hair transplant? What are the pros and cons of such use? Will it affect hair transplant results? Dr John Watts answers all these queries in this video. So far, he has performed over 2000+ hair transplant surgeries successfully.
Jurala Rajasekhar asks: Sir, I recently underwent a hair transplant procedure. Can I immediately use derma roller therapy after a hair transplant procedure? Will it be safe to use? Please explain.
The purpose of using a derma roller is to stimulate the growth factors in the scalp by causing minor injuries that promote the growth of baby hair. However, right after a hair transplant, new hair grafts from a safe donor area are transplanted, which means the derma roller is not necessary at this stage.
“Dermaroller therapy is not recommended immediately after a hair transplant procedure. Let me explain why. Using a derma roller immediately after a hair transplant can potentially damage the newly growing hair and affect the results of the transplant,” explained Dr John Watts.
He wondered why one needs to use derma roller therapy after a hair transplant as the purpose of a transplant is to provide thick hair growth with grafts harvested from the safe donor area of the scalp.
Typically, around one and a half to two months after the hair transplant procedure, new hair starts growing on the scalp.
“In such a scenario, one should never attempt to use a derma roller as it may damage the new hair growth. It is dangerous to use it,” said Dr John Watts.
If someone wishes to use a derma roller, it is essential to consult their hair transplant surgeon or dermatologist and use it under their supervision. They will be able to determine the right time and frequency for using a derma roller, ensuring it does not interfere with the hair transplant results.
“In some cases, if there is a delay in hair growth during the 7th, 8th, or 9th month after a hair transplant, a person may be advised to use platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy along with the derma roller to stimulate hair growth,” advised Dr John Watts.
However, it is important to note that this should only be done under professional medical guidance and not before the appropriate time.
