High quality satellite images of the Belbek airfield hit by Ukraine were shared

Radio Svoboda has released high-quality satellite images of the Belbek airfield in Crimea, taken on May 16, showing significant damage following a missile attack. The images reveal fires at the parking areas of Su-27, Su-30, and MiG-31 aircraft. The extent of the damage may be greater than visible in the satellite images due to the cluster warhead used in the attack. A burnt-out ammunition warehouse is also visible.

The news outlet Krym Realii, part of the U.S.-funded Radio Free Liberty network, reported that the attack occurred in two waves. Following the second wave, several explosions resembling detonations were heard. According to Krym Realii, the airfield hosted 12 Sukhoi Su-27 aircraft, 12 Sukhoi Su-27SM aircraft, three Sukhoi Su-27UB combat training aircraft, and five two-seat Sukhoi Su-30M2 jets—a total of 32 jets. The report did not specify if the aircraft were damaged and noted that "it is unclear whether the fire was caused by a missile strike."

Russian military blogger Ribar stated that the attack involved 16 ATACMS missiles, which the U.S. confirmed last month it had provided to Kyiv. Ribar added, "Unfortunately, one or two missiles could not be shot down, and the consequences have been revealed to the whole world through the publication of a video from a CCTV camera.
