Missing dogs. Missing children. And, for all intents and purposes, a missing mind. Evidence of monsters? Murder? Perhaps both. As an early blizzard buries Marysville, snowbound Danny Villard's paranoia blooms. Now, the only way to avoid getting framed as a serial killer is to engage the Enemy on its own ground... in the mine tunnels below. But not even Danny could suspect that something worse than an army of intelligent earwigs might be waiting in the dark. Notes:
1. Original written c. late December 2018 while living in described real location. Has trap-door to only a few-foot high, gravel-covered space below. No "dungeon door" or connection to side tunnels.
2. General topography accurate re: Church Street and area; railroad bed, Silver Creek, Drummlummon across gulch. Forest blocks direct view of the "Gunslinger Drift." (Seen GUNSINGER signs, too. Must clarify one day; latter sounds downright silly if real.)
3. NO mines or tunnels (x prospect holes) exist on this side of Silver Creek on site of Marysville townsite / residences. Thus no connection to the Drummlummon or other complexes surrounding town. (TMI FAQ: minerals are mined out of the stony batholiths of the mountains vs the town site which is a small "cup" that formed a swamp. Allowed a good layer of fertile ground but not tunnels as nothing down there to mine.)
4. Many... "echoes"... of my personal reality but ALL recognized, realized and utilized as a general outline. ZERO intent to deliberately or hint-hint make it some personal agenda or statement. Cannot ignore a perfect scenario for the plot. Damn easy to then use supporting truth as details if they work; here was a rare opportunity in which half the setup was personal!
5. The coroner is fictious. Sgt. William Kussman of the Lewis and Clark County Sheriff Department is real; now retired. Long ago we did both work at the ER in SPH; he an EMT, me the unit coordinator. Leo Dutton was his partner, matter fact, now serving as the long-time, highly-respected Sheriff. A wave as well to Wm's ex-wife Carol, my intrepid charge nurse from Surgical Floor and, later, ER as well. All outstanding professionals and super people.
6. Earwig data accurate as referenced. Except perhaps the flammability of their spray... had an "ethyl" in it so good enough for me and anyone who cares to check that out ...
7. Bat poking out of wall while up on ladder true. Must have been awake that day. More worried about its brush w/wood stain but looked like vapor chased it out of its hide and flew off okay.
8. Same with a couple earwigs falling out of a dishrag. There did seem to be a few showing up all the time but key word is "few." Admittedly creepy but not phobic.
9. NO novella intent. First idea was short w/simple freaky irony thought of someone getting super phobic and extreme-cleans/seals house only to be found all chewed up as making self the only organic matter around. Example of Muse having other ideas.
10. Again, reading anything ain't the point of YouTube. But it's content deemed entertaining to those few w/time, care or mindset. I don't read ebooks or Kindle myself as I like the paper and expanding physical library. Meanwhile, in between visual features like investigations and recons, this was tried as a Why Not? There were a couple non-issue places of text chopping off R margins but that is fixed as well as having slooow scroll vs constant pausing in earlier clumsy experiments.
For The Record: fiction has been produced all along the line but real history, then this paranormal tsunami, pre-empted any real formal submissions, etc. Each so far HAVE gone out "formally," but the process is months and months and months of waiting, usually to scare off editors or judges. Either receptive to monster earwigs, shapeshifting fake Blackfeet tyrants and the like... or not. None are admittedly anybody's usual cup 'o tea. But if it IS ... like me, I would hope I would enjoy the content vs sitting in obscurity on some rapidly-eroding hard disk.
No expectations beyond ability to "throw it out there." Confident of end product as feeling I only typed it out; only the conduit to something Else. Frequently I'm typing frantically to see what happens next w/o conscious clue. If even ONE person has the time/temperment to wade through any of these, Job Done (er, AND if that person halfway enjoys/is entertained).
