Al Capone’s Cell at Alcatraz: Inside Cell 181 in B-Block.  Al Capone was stripped of the luxuries and privileges he had managed to secure in previous prisons. At Alcatraz, he was treated like every other inmate—no special favors, no power, and no protection from the rigid rules of the Rock. From sweeping the cellhouse floors to working long hours in the prison’s laundry room, Capone was forced into the same daily grind as the rest of Alcatraz’s population. His presence was both a symbol of the government’s crackdown on organized crime and a reminder that not even America’s most notorious gangster could escape discipline within the prison’s cold concrete walls.

When people think of Alcatraz, one name often comes to mind—Al Capone. Known as “Scarface,” Capone was one of America’s most infamous gangsters during the Prohibition era. After years of dominating Chicago’s organized crime scene, his downfall came not from violence but from tax evasion. In 1934, he was transferred to the newly established Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary, where he served part of his sentence in Cell 181, B-Block.

Where Was Al Capone’s Cell?

Al Capone was housed in Cell 181 on B-Block, a narrow concrete cell measuring roughly 5 feet by 9 feet. Unlike the luxury he once enjoyed in Chicago, life on Alcatraz was stripped down to the basics—a steel bed, a sink, a toilet, and little else. His cell offered no privacy, no favors, and no special treatment.

Many visitors on Alcatraz prison tours still look for Capone’s cell in B-Block, one of the most requested spots on the island.

Daily Life for Capone on Alcatraz

Unlike in some earlier prisons where Capone was rumored to receive privileges, Alcatraz enforced strict rules of equality among inmates. Capone was given no exceptions. His daily routine included:

Prison Jobs: Capone worked in the cellhouse sweeping floors and later in the laundry room, far removed from the lavish life he once knew.

Strict Silence Policy: Inmates had limited opportunities to talk, which frustrated Capone and stripped away his ability to influence others.

Health Issues: Capone’s declining mental health due to untreated syphilis became evident during his years on the Rock.

No Special Privileges

Capone himself once admitted, “It looks like Alcatraz has me licked.” Unlike his previous prison stays, where influence and money bought comfort, Alcatraz guards and warden James A. Johnston made sure Capone lived like every other inmate.

He spent nearly 4.5 years on Alcatraz before being transferred in 1939 due to deteriorating health.
