Something many of you don’t know about me is that I had vitiligo as a teenager.

I was still too young then to know about my self image or what other people thought of me. But I do remember how worried my family were for me, the panic, the consultations, the treatments 🩺

With a lot of work, my vitiligo eventually faded but weirdly that’s when my panic set in. I got older and I became so much more aware of societal beauty standards and your place within them. I panicked at the thought of it coming back, I knew exactly what people would think/stare at me for.

I can now say, I’m a lot more confident in my body… but your self image being defined by your skin is still a very real problem for so many of us! 😔

Vitiligo is merely a skin ‘difference’, a matter of pigmentation. It is not contagious, it is not dangerous and it does not change anything about your ability to live life.

The only ‘fear’ is from society, a world that teaches you that being different and standing out is wrong and that our skin colours define our status.

In this episode, Shankar @thevitiligoman and I talk about how vitiligo affects self-esteem and intimacy, how do we learn to love our bodies even as the world is teaching us otherwise!
