The song 'Vande Mataram' is recognised as the National Song (Rastriya Geet) of India, but the National Anthem (Rastriya Gaan) chosen was 'Jana Gana Mana', written by Rabindranath Tagore. The reasons for this distinction are complex, mainly stemming from historical and social contexts: I) Vande Mataram' is a part of Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay's novel 'Anandamath'. The context of the novel and some of its passages were alleged to contain anti-Muslim sentiments. 2) In the 1930s, the Muslim League and certain other Muslim organisations raised objections to this aspect of the song. They felt it was contrary to the monotheistic beliefs of Islam.

In 1937, the Congress Working Committee, on the advice of Rabindranath Tagore, adopted only the first two stanzas of the song as the National Song for their sessions, as they were relatively secular. However, the controversy did not completely subside.

Finally, while 'Vande Mataram' holds immense nationalistic importance and a key historical role in the freedom movement, 'Jana Gana Mana' was ultimately chosen as the National Anthem to ensure a more universal and secular representation, free from religious controversy. It remains highly revered as the National Song.
