On Wed, Oct 21st, Juan Enriquez led a Zoom discussion on how technology transforms our ethics.

Juan after working on genomics and brain science for a few decades, decided to think about the ethics of changing life forms, humans, and brains. That led him to a longer project than he thought. In the end he found ethics morph over time, sometimes 180 degrees. And the biggest single driver of this change is what technology enables us to do, how much we have, how generous we can be.

Juan's book helps navigate some complex debates and provide an instrument to discuss with those passionately certain and right. When people debate each other today, they often feel they are 100% right, no question; if you do not agree you are clearly a… There is little room for nuance, context, an understanding of why the other person can feel so very passionately about something so obvious to us. God help you if you say, Tweet, imply the wrong thing. Fury and condemnation are in vogue, and celebrated by ones tribe. Two words have been banished from most campuses, debates, political encounters: Humility and compassion.

But if ethics change over time, and if technology accelerates this change, even our o-so-enlightened contemporaries might end up on the wrong side of history. We have all endlessly electronically tattooed ourselves through Google, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other media; our actions will be laid bare for generations. We best judge our ancestors, and contemporaries, as we wish to be judged in the future.
