When I’m taking an excited or impulsive dog outside, I’m not looking for a perfect sit — I’m looking for a calm mind.

I want the dog to choose to sit and settle, not because I’m forcing it, but because they’re learning to regulate themselves.

A loose leash is a big deal here. It tells the dog, “You’re making a good choice.”

If the dog is tense, pulling, or mentally scattered, that’s when I use pressure → release. A little pressure to guide, and the moment they soften, I release.

That timing teaches them exactly when they’re doing the right thing.

We’re also watching for that split second when the dog offers eye contact or relaxes their body.

Reward that. Mark it.

Let them know calm behavior gets them what they want.

And yes — dogs want to play, and that’s totally fine.

But I’m always checking:
“Are they just excited… or are they crossing into noxious, overly intense behavior?”

The goal is simple:
👉 Respect personal space
👉 Keep the mind calm
👉 Match their energy so they can learn to settle

Repeat this often and you’ll see that impulsiveness start to fade. Stay patient, stay relaxed, and make it part of your daily routine.
