Niniay Mohammad grew up in Marawi City and had just graduated as a teacher on May 23, 2017—the same day that local militants from the Maute ISIS Group launched an attack to take control of her home city. Although she had seen text messages being sent around saying that there would be an attack by the Maute ISIS Group, Niniay thought they were just rumours.

Niniay was able to escape the city after two days, but the siege lasted for five months.The conflict resulted in mass displacement, over a thousand deaths and the destruction of the city. This is Niniay’s story of how she survived the initial days.
