Pride actually began with the Stonewall Riots in New York City in June 1969. Back then, police raided a gay bar called the Stonewall Inn — something that happened often. But this time, the LGBTQ+ community resisted, and those nights of protest sparked a movement.

One year later, in 1970, the very first Pride marches took place in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and San Francisco. They were called the Christopher Street Liberation Day marches, after the street where Stonewall happened.

So when we celebrate Pride today, whether in Copenhagen or anywhere in the world, we’re not just throwing a colorful party — we’re honoring a fight for rights, dignity, and visibility that began more than 50 years ago.”
