1983 was the year that Modern Heavy Metal became Mainstream. The aggressiveness of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal had fused with the radio friendly sensibilities of 70's Hard Rock. MTV also gave this new music a push to be more theatrical. Dio's Holy Diver, Ozzy Osbourne's Bark at the Moon, Quiet Riot's Metal Health, Motley Crue's Shout at the Devil, Def Leppard's Pyromania, and Iron Maiden's Piece of Mind all added to this Juggernaut of a year. This year also saw the birth of two of the Big Four Thrash band's debut records Metallica's Kill em All and Slayer's Show no Mercy.

Dio was the perfect band for this era. Ronnie had just left Black Sabbath who were responsible for the creation of the Genre, and the debut album Holy Diver had all the hits and all the guitar solos by one of the greatest guitarists of this era Vivian Campbell. If I had to pick two songs that perfectly summed up this year it would be Dio's Holy Diver, and Quiet Riot's Bang your Head.
