There is a paradox for people who are estranged or withdrawn from their families due to abuse.

On the one hand, in those relationships, we are never fully seen or known by a parent. To an abusive parent, we are typically only an idea, a role, a resource, or an accusation.

On the other hand, once we leave because we choose to be someone outside of that deep loneliness, we don't have the human experience of having a parent witness the life we are building or, in many cases, rebuilding.

The paradox is that either way, we are not known. That is both incredibly freeing and grief-inducing. Being no one's child is painful until we see the safety and freedom in it. The impasse leads us to realizing it is a big nothing when it should be everything.

In bravely building a life and healing, you don't need to be seen by someone who was never fully interested in you becoming somebody.
