Emperor scorpions are some of the largest living scorpions. The emperor scorpion's size and shape makes it intimidating, but these scorpions are actually considered shy and are generally harmless to humans. Emperor scorpion venom is harmless to humans. Their sting is about equivalent to a bee sting - it's the pincers you have to watch out for! Adults don't use their stinger to catch food and save it only for use in self defense. So, an emperor scorpion sting is like a bee sting. It's not fatal to humans. Their pincers, on the other hand, really pack a punch. Emperor scorpion adults use their pincers to grab and hold prey. A pinch from an emperor scorpion would hurt much more than a sting!

Range: tropical west Africa
Size: over 7 inches (18cm) long and 30g in weight
Diet: insects, especially termites, as well as small vertebrates
Lifespan: 5+ years
