Music: Malcolm Archer
Text: Charles Wesley
Orchestration: Nathan Hofheins
The 18th-century Methodist preacher Charles Wesley was, without doubt, the most prolific author of Christian hymns and devotional poems, with more than 6000 hymn texts to his credit. “Rejoice, the Lord Is King!”—one of Wesley’s best-known Easter hymns—has been set to more than twenty different tunes in various hymnals over the years. In 1995, English organist/composer Malcolm Archer published his own lively setting of “Rejoice, the Lord Is King!” Archer was living in the United States at the time, but would return to England to later serve as organist and director of music at St. Paul’s Cathedral, London. The orchestration heard here is by Nathan Hofheins, a longtime collaborator with The Tabernacle Choir and currently a member of the music faculty at Brigham Young University, his alma mater.
(Lyrics)
Rejoice, the Lord is King,
Your Lord and King adore;
Mortals, give thanks and sing,
And triumph evermore:
Lift up your hearts, lift up your voice,
Rejoice, again I say, rejoice.
Jesus, the Savior, reigns
The God of truth and love;
When He had purged our stains,
He took His seat above:
Lift up your hearts, lift up your voice,
Rejoice, again I say, rejoice.
His kingdom cannot fail,
He rules o’er earth and heaven;
The keys to death and hell
Are to our Jesus given:
Lift up your hearts, lift up your voice,
Rejoice, again I say, rejoice.
He sits at God’s right hand
Till all His foes submit,
And bow to His command
And fall beneath His feet:
Lift up your hearts, lift up your voice,
Rejoice, again I say, rejoice.
Rejoice, the Lord is King,
Your Lord and King adore;
Mortals, give thanks and sing,
And triumph evermore:
Lift up your hearts, lift up your voice,
Rejoice, again I say, rejoice.
